Tenant Based vs. Project Based Assistance
There several types of assistance programs available. The programs fall into 2 categories - Tenant Based Assistance and Project Based Assistance.
Tenant Based Assistance - This type of assistance is based on you as a tenant. The HUD Housing Choice Voucher program is an example of tenant based assistance. This assistance can move with you from one property to another and can be used in a variety of rental properties including apartment complexes, duplexes, townhouses, single family homes, etc.
Project Based Assistance - This type of assistance is based on a particular address. The apartment complex has a contract with a government agency to provide rental assistance in some or all of their apartments. In order to use this assistance you have to reside in that particular apartment complex. These apartment complexes are independently owned and operated and the type of assistance provided may vary. If you have questions about vacancies or rental assistance, you need to contact the owner or manager for the complex.
