Landlords Tenant Issues

Applicants - Landlords - Landlord Tenant Issues - Tenant Based vs. Project Based Assistance

We often get calls regarding problems between landlords and tenants. Landlords and Tenants have certain rights and responsibilities. To avoid problems, it is important that you know what these rights and responsibilities are.

We cannot give advice regarding these issues. A lease is a legal and binding document between the landlord and tenant. If you have a legal question, you need to consult an attorney.

If you are looking for basic information, we recommend you contact the Department of Consumer Protection. They have available a booklet called "The Wisconsin Way A Guide for Landlords and Tenants" This booklet outlines the rules relating to Wisconsin rental housing. It gives an overview of key parts of Wisconsin's "Landlord-Tenant law" including:

  • Things You Should Know Before Renting
  • Responsibilities of the Landlord and Tenants
  • Terminating a Tenancy
  • Eviction

An overview of Tenant Rights can be accessed at http://datcp.state.wi.us/cp/consumerinfo/cp/top-complaints/tenants.jsp

You can obtain a copy of the full booklet by calling 1-800-422-7128 or accessing http://datcp.state.wi.us

There are many misconceptions when it comes to the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants. It is important for you to have accurate information when making decisions and it is worth the time and effort to be an informed landlord or tenant.
